Moving to Australia from South Africa – Mitchell’s Interview

Could you share with us what your reasons for moving were? What was the experience like?

I moved back to my family in Sydney, Australia after living in the Southern Cape of South Africa for 12 years. I am a wildlife writer and photographer and during my time in SA I wrote three books and many magazine articles. Getting everything organized for the move and doing so at high speed as a place had been found for me on a container shortly about to leave for Sydney proved a daunting experience but in the end, it all came together, thanks in large part to Sterdts very professional handling of their end of the move.

Choosing a matching moving company is a serious decision, we know that. How did you manage to find the suitable one among many others?

My research was based mainly on reviews I read on Sirelo’s site. Price was a consideration, of course, but my primary concern was to minimize breakage and exposure to theft. I have traveled widely and have seen how easily things can go awry. Other companies had far less encouraging reviews and I decided against using them specifically for that reason, despite their lower quotes. Going with a less-than-reliable mover is false economy, in my opinion. There is no substitute for the peace of mind that comes from dealing with a topnotch outfit.

We are curious about the most busy part of removal, the moving day – did everything go as planned?

The packers arrived punctually and set to work immediately, wrapping all my belongings and marking my name and the contents on the outside, which I was sure would assist Australian Customs to check it through speedily once the load arrived at its destination. The leader of the team accompanied me as each room was cleared to ensure that nothing got left behind. Everyone knew their precise job and carried it out skillfully and they all worked very efficiently together. I should also mention that they were genuinely friendly, which is not always something you can rely on these days.

Do you have any  tips that would be helpful for others to make their moving day less chaotic?

I would suggest that anyone planning a major move overseas such as I just had, should find someone who will not only do a good job packing and moving but also make the client aware of those things that will be required by the Customs people in the port of final destination. There should be no unpleasant surprises along the way. And there needn’t be if it’s done properly. I know that I can look forward to constant progress reports from Sterdts as my cargo makes its way to Sydney and then instantly inform when it arrives.

Of course, one of the most important aspects of moving – money and budget. Did any costs came as a surprise or were you fully aware of all the expenses?

I’ve traveled widely and have a pretty good idea what the costs of moving are.
