I explained my whereabouts and situation to Terven multiple times and each time he brushed off my concerns with 'Will keep you posted' and failed to read what I had written. I asked what procedure I needed to follow, and he seemed to either not know (strange for an importing agent?) or be too incompetent to actually think ahead to what I needed to do.
The first problem was when he told me at the very last minute that I needed to rush to SARS offices to clear my items, only problem was I didn't have my passport with me, and SARS needed to see the physical copy. At huge expense and hassle to myself, I managed to make this happen which all could have been avoided if Terven had actually responded to my multiple email requests asking what the procedure was that I would need to follow when the goods arrived.
He blamed it on SARS saying they 'keep changing things' however looking at other freight forwarder websites, it's clear that this is not some new requirement, as other forwarders have had this info on their sites for years.
Then they dropped an invoice on me for R110 000, just completely unexplained and out of the blue. Bearing in mind this is more than double what I was originally quoted for my move.
When I queried it, it turned out some line items were double-charges. Other items, were 'holding fees' as my belongings were inspected by customs. Somehow the cost of storing a few boxes in a warehouse in the Cape for less than 2 weeks (Independant Warehousing Solutions) was R40 000.
Terven seemed to be 'shocked' as well, but I am paying Sebenza, a professional company, to clear my goods and to pre-warn me about any potential charges and how much it might cost. I received no warnings or information beforehand about the possibility that my quote would be doubled in price.
At the end of the day it felt like I was being extorted by this company and their agents, where if I didn't pay I would just rack up more charges or never see my goods again.
I had explicitly asked for pickup and delivery / offloading of my goods. The goods were picked up from the source, however when it came to drop-off, the truck arrived and the driver said that he would not be offloading anything, it was up to me to offload the truck! Then I called Terven and he confirmed that yes, the driver would not offload, so I needed to do it - but keep in mind that at no point in all the back-and-forth emails and phone calls to organise the delivery date, did he ever mention this. And he knew that I was just one person at my house receiving a delivery. I could have organised help if he HAD JUST TOLD ME that I would not be getting offloading assistance from the delivery. Absolutely pathetic service. In the end I offloaded the goods myself from pallets on a big flatbed truck.
The strange thing is that Terven was pleasant enough to deal with and he seemed genuinely interested in helping, but the actual results were stress, calamity, incompetence and last-minute panic the whole way through.
I could never recommend RedNav or Sebenza. Don't use them unless you like this kind of complete disarray and extra enormous expenses to be dumped on you.Read more
I am so glad I contacted Sebenza to assist me with our airfreight imports. Although we are still a small company, we received the time and attention as if we are a big corporate. Thank you, for the awesome service, looking forward to a long business relationship with Sebenza!
